Aalto University

Aalto University is a new university with centuries of experience. The university was created as a result of a merger between three leading Finnish universities that include the Helsinki University of Technology, the Helsinki School of Economics, and the University of Art and Design Helsinki. It comprises six schools with over 19,000 students and 5,000 staff members, thus being Finland’s third-largest university. The six schools of Aalto University are all renowned institutions in their respective fields. The main campus of Aalto University is located in Otaniemi, Espoo, where the engineering schools operate, with two schools currently headquartered in Helsinki: the School of Business in T????l?? and the School of Arts, Design and Architecture in Arabianranta (set to be relocated to Otaniemi in 2016). In addition, the university operates several units outside Greater Helsinki in Mikkeli, Pori and Vaasa.

The university is named in honour of Alvar Aalto, a prominent Finnish architect, designer and alumnus of the former Helsinki University of Technology, who was also instrumental in designing a large part of the university’s main campus in Otaniemi.

Espoo

Welcome to Espoo, the second largest city by population in Finland. Espoo is an active and dynamic technology city close to nature. It is the western neighbour of Finland???s capital city, Helsinki and belongs to the metropolitan area which has close to one million inhabitants.
Espoo is an exception to traditional Finnish cities and towns, which have usually grown around one centre. Espoo has five centres, for example Lepp??vaara,??Tapiola??and old Espoo, which provide wide services to the 210 000 inhabitants of the city.
Espoo appreciates education and as proof of this are the numerous schools and educational institutes. For example Aalto University in??Otaniemi??is an example of educational politics on a high level that has its goals in the future.

Finland

Finland , officially the Republic of Finland, is a Nordic country situated in the Fennoscandian region of Northern Europe. It is bordered by Sweden to the west, Norway to the north, Russia to the east, and Estonia to the south across the Gulf of Finland.

As of 2013, Finland’s population was around 5.5 million, with the majority concentrated in its southern regions. In terms of area, it is the eighth largest country in Europe and the most sparsely populated country in the European Union. Finland is a parliamentary republic with a central government based in the capital of Helsinki, local governments in 336 municipalities and an autonomous region, the ??land Islands. About one million residents live in the Greater Helsinki area (consisting of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen), which also produces a third of the country’s GDP. Other large cities include Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Jyv??skyl??, Lahti, and Kuopio.

Finland is a land of interesting contrasts, such as the four seasons, the Midnight Sun and the winter darkness, urban and rural, East and West.

As you look out from the plane, the first impression you may have is that there are a lot of trees??? an endless carpet of forest, with many lakes and small towns in between. It???s kind of a surprise when you land in Helsinki to find that the airport is so modern and efficient. Not a polar bear in sight.

It???s truly amazing how uniquely exotic each season can be. Four times a year, nature changes its uniform completely ??? colour, light, temperature, sounds and smells. Everything changes in a way that happens nowhere else.

The Finns are also considered to be cool ??? a bit quiet and reserved. However, they are actually warm, friendly, hospitable and especially honest people once you get to know them and we encourage you to do just that.
